Everybody seems to love pocket digital cameras. They're fairly cheap, store tons of pictures, and are small enough to go anywhere with you in your pocket. However, some people long for more. Perhaps for higher quality photographs, or they simply prefer the flexibility of film SLR (Single Lens Reflex) cameras.
Digital SLR cameras (commonly called DSLRs) combine the mechanical action of a film camera with a digital sensor. The user has full control over the exposure settings, exactly like a film camera. These cameras can also take various lenses, even some that weren't designed for digital cameras. The Nikon D40 is a fantastic entry into this market. It can take phenomenal photographs, yet is affordable and relatively easy to use. It's also a bit smaller than most DSLRs.
